When extreme temperatures arrive in the Columbia River Gorge region, the houseless community and other vulnerable community members face extreme risk to their health and well-being. Mid-Columbia Community Action Council (MCCAC) partners with Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP) and other agencies and nonprofits to keep the list below updated so community members know where to find relief during extreme weather conditions.

Hood River County

During severe weather events, supply bundles are available at MCCAC’s Hood River office at 606 State Street Suite 1B during regular business hours. Cooling supply bundles include water and gatorade, snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, cooling cloths, and/or handheld fans.

The Hood River Library at 502 E. State Street in Hood River is available as a community cooling center during regular business hours, Tuesday through Thursday from 10:00 am to 7:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. The Cascade Locks Library is open Tuesday and Thursday from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. The Parkdale Library is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm and Friday and Saturday from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm.

Mid-Columbia Community Action Council operates the 24-bed, non-congregate winter seasonal shelter at 1733 Oak St. in Hood River. The shelter is typically open mid-November through mid-March yearly and is staffed 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. For those who need transportation to access a shelter, information about public transit schedules, routes, and dial-a-ride options in the Mid-Columbia region can be found here. Hood River residents who are enrolled in PacificSource insurance through the Oregon Health Plan in are eligible for a free ride to a shelter or to family/friends who have air conditioning using Non-Emergent Medical Transportation and can call (855) 397-3617 for more information about this service.

Wasco County

During severe weather events, supply bundles are available at The Gloria Center in The Dalles at 2505 W. 7th St. during regular business hours. Cooling supply bundles include water and gatorade, snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, cooling cloths, and/or handheld fans. MCCAC also operates an emergency shelter at The Gloria Center during severe weather events. When emergency shelter operations are activated, MCCAC will notify its network of community partners and volunteers, and post announcements on its website and on social media.

MCCAC operates The Annex transitional housing and shelter facility in The Dalles. The Annex is open year round and is located at 200 W. 2nd in The Dalles. For more information about available shelter beds or other emergency lodging resources MCCAC can provide to Wasco and Sherman County residents during severe winter weather events, fill out a shelter intake form here or call (541) 980-0855.

Additionally, people in need of a place to stay during the daytime or who need a free meal may go to St. Vincent de Paul 315 W. 3rd St. in The Dalles. Their community room is open to all on a drop-in basis between 9:30 am and 1:30 pm on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

Sherman County

During severe weather events, supply bundles and information on shelter resources are available through the Sherman County Office of Emergency Management. Cooling supply bundles include water and gatorade, snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, cooling cloths, and/or handheld fans. Sherman County residents enrolled in the Oregon Health Plan can call (877) 875-4657 to ask about transportation options to a shelter. Skamania County

During severe weather events, supply bundles are available at Washington Gorge Action Programs (WAGAP’s) offices in Stevenson during regular business hours. Cooling supply bundles include water and gatorade, snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, cooling cloths, and/or handheld fans.

The WAGAP Housing Teams will work on a case-by-case basis to assist individuals at risk from extreme temperatures or air quality conditions. Please call WAGAP for assistance at 509-493-2662 during regular business hours Monday through Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. WAGAP will also post updates to its website if there are specific instructions.

WAGAP operates a winter warming shelter located in Stevenson near the Hegewald Center. For more information and other warming resources, please call the Stevenson office at 509-427-8229 Monday- Thursday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Klickitat County

During severe weather events, supply bundles are available at WAGAP’s offices in Bingen and Goldendale, and at Second Hand Rose, WAGAP’s community thrift store in Bingen. Supply bundles can be picked up during regular business hours. Cooling supply bundles include water and gatorade, snacks, sunscreen, lip balm, cooling cloths, and/or handheld fans.

Partner resources include Father’s House Fellowship at 207 S Klickitat Street in Goldendale; Father’s House is open Monday through Friday from 12:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and will keep supplies on hand. The Goldendale Community Library will also have supplies on hand at 131 W. Burgen Street and will be available Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and Tuesday and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The White Salmon Valley Community Library will be available Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Persons seeking shelter and other warming resources in Klickitat County can call WAGAP offices for support. In Goldendale and eastern Klickitat County call 509-773-6834 Monday – Thursday 9am-5pm and Friday 9am-1pm. In Bingen/White Salmon and western Klickitat County call 509-493-2662 Monday - Thursday 9am-5pm.
